Engineering and Construction Industry – 2022 Outlook

As the team at Sleighter Design prepares to close out 2021, we had the opportunity to reflect on the past few years, but have also started planning what appears to be a very optimistic 2022 for not only at our firm, but for the region and construction industry overall.

In Southwestern Pennsylvania, the construction and engineering industry continues to rebound from the effects of the pandemic, and with the passing of the recent Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), we anticipate a number of projects getting underway once funding for long-needed upgrades kicks in. The infrastructure bill will deploy $1 trillion over five years, of which $579 billion is allocated to public works projects like roads and bridge maintenance and construction.

“With the implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Pennsylvania is set to see some of the most funding, which will kickstart a number of projects throughout the region — many of which were previously put on hold due to funding” said Rob Sleighter, President of Sleighter Design. “While there are still many questions regarding this bill, this will be a big step forward for not only Pennsylvania, but even states like West Virginia that desperately need improvements to its infrastructure.”

According to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Fact Sheet for Pennsylvania, released by the White House, there are a number of advantages and tasks outlined, including:
Repair and rebuild our roads and bridges with a focus on climate change mitigation, resilience, equity, and safety for all users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

  • Improve healthy, sustainable transportation options for millions of Americans.
  • Help connect every American to reliable high-speed internet.
  • Prepare more of our infrastructure for the impacts of climate change, cyber attacks, and extreme weather events.
  • Deliver clean drinking water to every American and eliminate the nation’s lead service lines and pipes.
  • Improve our nation’s airports.
